Why Let 'Em Speak?

Updated: Feb 23

I’ve been writing poetry since I was 13, and it’s been a lifeline for me in some of my darkest moments. It gave me a voice when I felt like I had none, and I’ve seen how powerful it can be—not just for the writer, but for those who hear it. Some people think poetry is a fading art, but I know how impactful it can be, both personally and for the world around us. My goal is to create opportunities for people to share their stories and be heard. I want to see poetry thrive, not just as an art form, but as a way for people to connect, heal, and grow. Starting with my own community, I want to build spaces where voices are celebrated and verses can be heard. Poetry has the power to change lives, and I’m committed to helping others experience that.

In June 2023, I was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, a season of isolation that I now recognize as divine intervention. What initially felt like a void of darkness and loneliness became a sanctuary of peace, understanding, and healing. The first words God spoke to me were, “Now, Let Me Speak.” In that moment, He empowered me to find and use my own voice. Later, He called me to create a space where others like me could do the same.

Thus, Let Em’ Speak Literary Arts Organization was born, officially established in August 2024.
